Abstract

The review presents various theories of the etiopathogenesis of pilonidal disease. To date, there is no single unifying theory of the origin and development of the disease. Two directions prevail – the congenital and acquired origin of pilonidal disease. Most authors, regardless of the theory of origin, note the presence of a deep crease between the buttocks as an important factor in the high risk of recurrence of pilonidal disease. The treatment of the disease is only surgical, with a wide range of operations.
