THE DEVELOPMENT OF COGNITIVE ABILITY IN TODDLERS WHO WERE IN STRESSFUL CONDITIONS AND ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF FEEDING
Abstract
Summary. The aim of the research is to study the development of cognitive function in infants and toddlers living in the Donbass region during the armed conflict. Materials and methods. A dynamic development of the clinical examination with assessment of four indicators of cognitive function (speech, thought, game and attention) in 68 children in the combat zone was conducted. These children constituted the I (main) group which was divided into 2 subgroups. The subgroup Ia included 36 children who were breastfed. The subgroup Ib included 32 children who were bottle-fed. II (control) group constituted 88 children who were out of a zone of the military conflict. Among them 47 children were breastfed, who were included into subgroup IIa and 41 children who were bottle-fed and were included into subgroup IIb. Assessment of the level of cognitive development of children was carried out using a standardized clinical-psychological techniques “Gnome”.
Conclusions: The stress of military actions promotes a delay of rates of cognitive skills due to the expressed deficit of attention and an arrest of development of the expressional speech that leads to decrease in children stock of knowledge and ideas.
Breastfeeding promotes development of coping — overcoming a stress, maintaining a balance between the environment and the child’s own resources. Children who were bottle-fed and were subjected to the stress of war are in need of long and complex rehabilitation activities.
